Comptroller – Large Toyota Dealership

We are seeking an experienced Automotive Comptroller to oversee the accounting and financial operations of a high-volume Toyota dealership. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, strengthening internal controls, ensuring timely manufacturer reporting, and providing dealership leadership with reliable financial information. The ideal candidate has extensive automotive dealership accounting experience and is comfortable managing the complexity and pace of a large-volume operation.

Job Responsibilities

  • Directs all dealership accounting and financial reporting functions
  • Oversees the preparation and submission of accurate monthly financial statements in accordance with Toyota and dealership requirements
  • Ensures month-end and year-end closing processes are completed accurately and on schedule
  • Maintains the dealership's general ledger and ensures accounts are properly reconciled
  • Reviews financial statements, schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for accuracy
  • Oversees accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, payroll accounting, vehicle accounting, and related functions
  • Manages daily cash controls, bank reconciliations, deposits, and dealership banking activity
  • Monitors contracts in transit, vehicle receivables, schedules, aged accounts, and outstanding balances
  • Oversees floorplan accounting and reconciliation of vehicle inventory
  • Ensures new, used, wholesale, dealer trade, and inventory transactions are properly recorded
  • Reconciles manufacturer statements, incentives, holdback, rebates, warranty receivables, and other Toyota-related accounts
  • Establishes and maintains effective internal accounting controls and dealership accounting procedures
  • Identifies accounting discrepancies and ensures timely research and resolution
  • Oversees accounting office personnel, including workflow, training, performance, and deadlines
  • Works closely with the General Manager and department managers to review financial performance and address variances
  • Assists management with budgeting, forecasting, expense control, and financial analysis
  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local accounting, tax, payroll, and record-retention requirements
  • Coordinates with external accountants, auditors, banks, taxing authorities, and other business partners as required
  • Protects dealership assets and confidential financial information
  • Maintains accurate records and supporting documentation for audits and manufacturer reviews
  • Continually evaluates accounting processes and implements improvements appropriate for a high-volume dealership

Requirements

  • Significant automotive dealership accounting experience, preferably in a Comptroller, Controller, or senior dealership accounting leadership role
  • Experience with the financial operations of a large-volume franchised automotive dealership
  • Strong knowledge of dealership accounting principles, financial statements, schedules, inventory, floorplan, and manufacturer receivables
  • Toyota dealership accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience managing an accounting department and developing accounting personnel
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced dealership environment
  • Strong understanding of internal controls, reconciliations, and financial reporting
  • Experience working directly with dealership executive and departmental management
  • High degree of professionalism, integrity, discretion, and accountability

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred
  • Five or more years of progressive automotive dealership accounting experience preferred
  • Previous Comptroller, Controller, or comparable dealership accounting management experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with a major automotive dealership management system (DMS) required
  • Toyota dealership and high-volume automotive retail experience preferred
